On January 6, 2017, a 34 year-old inmate died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man was taken into custody on December 23, 2015, when he was booked into the jail for the charges of forced oral copulation and rape.
A little after 4:15 a.m. this morning, a deputy conducted an hourly visual cell check on the floor where the victim was housed. When the deputy arrived at the cell, he observed the unresponsive victim in his cell. It appeared the victim fashioned a piece of blanket into a ligature around his neck. Deputies immediately entered the single occupant cell and removed the ligature. Medical staff inside the facility were notified, and along with custody staff, attempted to perform life-saving measures on the victim. Ultimately, efforts to revive the victim failed and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Department will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
