Charges Upgraded on Murder Suspect
A man in custody for a vehicle assault earlier this week has been charged with murder, now that his victim has died of injuries sustained during the incident. Joseph Leonard, 60, had been in custody on a charge of attempted murder since June 6th, for running over a man with his pickup truck after an altercation in the Arden Arcade area. The victim was pronounced deceased earlier this afternoon.
Last Thursday, Leonard was at a fast food restaurant at Howe Avenue and Arden Way, when he became involved in an altercation with the victim and another man. As the victim, a 34 year-old male, rode away from the location on a bicycle, Leonard ran him down with his pickup truck. Leonard then proceeded to kick the victim in the head as he lay motionless and indefensible. Leonard was detained at the scene by a witness to the incident, and taken into custody by Sheriff's deputies upon their arrival.
Homicide detectives are looking to identify and speak with the man that the victim was with during this incident. He is believed to have fled the scene in an effort to escape Leonard, who was chasing him and the victim in his (Leonard's) vehicle. This subject is being sought as a witness to the incident, and is not considered to have any culpability regarding the actions that resulted in the victim's death. Detectives believe that this man may be able to provide information regarding the circumstances that led to the altercation between Leonard and the victim.
Anyone having information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (916) 874-5115. The identity of the victim in this case will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, after notification has been made to his next of kin.
