Cold Case Homicide Arrest
Sheriff's Homicide detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a thirteen year-old girl in March of last year. Ryan Douglas Roberts, 23, was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail earlier this morning on a charge of murder. He is currently being held without bail.
On March 6, 2012 at approximately 6:30 a.m., Sheriff's deputies responded to Rosemont Community Park in eastern Sacramento County. A woman walking through the park discovered the body of the victim, later identified as Jessica Funk-Haslam, in the dugout of a baseball field. It was later determined that the victim died from a combination of asphyxia, blunt force trauma and a puncture wound to her neck.
Detectives commenced an investigation that involved extensive neighborhood canvasses, interviews of hundreds of people, and the analysis of evidence collected from the scene. In spite of these efforts, the case remained unsolved for seventeen months.
On August 7, 2013, detectives were informed that a recently arrested man (Roberts) had a DNA sample that matched the profile left on evidence at the crime scene. Investigators worked aggressively in cooperation with the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office throughout the course of the day. Late yesterday, detectives located and spoke with Roberts near his place of employment in Sacramento County. As a result of the evidence and the interview with detectives, Roberts was arrested in connection to the case. While the investigation remains ongoing, detectives have nothing to indicate the involvement of any suspect(s) in this case other than Roberts. Nonetheless, anyone having information pertinent to this case is asked to contact the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (916) 874-5115.
