Source of Weapons, Explosives Investigated
Sheriff's detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding a cache of weapons and explosive materials found at a property in Rio Linda late yesterday evening. The discovery of the items prompted a response from Sheriff's detectives, the Sacramento Metro Fire Department, and explosive ordnance detail (EOD) teams from local and federal law enforcement.
On August 16th, Sheriff's detectives received information from the Placer County Sheriff's Office regarding a property in the 5800 block of 24th Street in Rio Linda. Placer County deputies contacted a man in their jurisdiction, and discovered evidence that suggested the presence of illegal weapons and other items at the aforementioned property.
Sheriff's detectives responded to the location, and obtained consent from the owner to conduct a search of the property. Over the next several hours, they discovered a cache of weapons including four assault rifles, a shotgun, a rifle and five handguns. One of the handguns and two of the rifles were equipped with silencers. In addition, officers recovered over twenty high-capacity magazines, between 20,000 and 30,000 rounds of ammunition, multiple passports, and over $33,000 in cash.
The search of the property also yielded numerous explosive materials and assorted items including several jars of black powder, a pipe bomb and numerous cricket bombs, which were detonated at the scene by bomb squads from the Sheriff's Department and the FBI.All of the aforementioned items were believed to belong to a man living on the property, who is currently in custody in the Placer County Jail. Sheriff's detectives are working with federal law enforcement officials to further investigate the motive behind the possession of these items, and the ongoing investigation will determine in the future which criminal charges will be filed in connection to this case.
