Human Remains Discovered in Field
Sheriff's Homicide detectives have arrested a man in connection with the remains of a body found in a field yesterday. William Olsen, 47, was booked yesterday at the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he had been in custody since the previous day for an auto theft charge. Olsen was arrested on a charge of murder and is ineligible for bail.
On August 26th, detectives were contacted by the Placer County Sheriff's Department regarding this case. A source had provided information about a person being buried in a field in the 7500 block of 34th Street in Rio Linda. Based on the information, homicide detectives conducted follow-up information and responded to the location yesterday morning. They enlisted the assistance of search-and-rescue dogs to conduct a search of the field.
After receiving alerts from the search dogs, detectives discovered a makeshift gravesite on the property. They then contacted the Sacramento County District Attorney's crime lab, who sent a team of criminalists to the location to assist with the search. An excavation of the site was performed, and detectives discovered the remains of a human body.
The initial information provided to detectives was consistent with what they found at the scene, and also included information as to who was responsible for the person's death. Follow-up investigation by detectives corroborated that information, which resulted in the arrest of Olsen in connection to this case. While positive identification of the deceased person has not been made, detectives are investigating the possibility of the victim being a reported missing person from outside of Sacramento County. The identity of the victim in this case will be made by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office, after notification has been made to next of kin.
