On March 8, 2017, a 53 year-old inmate died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The man was taken into custody in the late evening hours of March 7, 2017, when he was booked into the jail for a violation of parole.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m. this morning, a deputy conducted a visual check of the holding cell occupied by the victim. When the deputy arrived at the cell, he observed the victim with a piece of clothing around his neck. It appeared the victim fashioned a piece of his own t-shirt into a ligature around his neck. Deputies immediately entered the cell and removed the ligature. Medical staff inside the facility were notified, and along with custody staff, attempted to perform life-saving measures on the victim. These efforts were continued until the arrival of emergency medical personnel from outside the facility. Ultimately, efforts to revive the victim failed and the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Department will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
