As a Deputy Sheriff with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, you have the ability to engage in the following law enforcement duties; basic patrol functions, correctional assignments, criminal investigation, community oriented policing, court security, crime scene investigation, Marine Enforcement Detail, Special Enforcement (SWAT, Narcotics/Gangs, etc), Regional Transit Detail, Rangemaster/staff, Canine Detail, Recruitment, Academy Instructors/staff, Pre-Employment Investigations and more!

Employment Requirements, Salary, and Benefits

All Deputy Sheriff Candidates must meet the following entry-level requirements:

• 18 years of age or older (no maximum age limit)
• United States citizenship, or eligible for and has applied for
• High School diploma or G.E.D.
• No Felony Convictions
• Valid California Driver's License

In addition, a candidate will be required to:

• Complete a Personal History Statement
• Submit to Drug Testing
• Submit to a Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA)
• Undergo a Medical and Psychological Examination
• Complete a Physical Ability Test
• Possibly work Holidays, weekends and irregular hours
• Successfully complete a written examination
• Successfully complete a Personal Assessment Interview

Must possess one of the following:

• Peace Officer's Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic, Intermediate or Advanced Certificate
• P.O.S.T. Academy Certificate of completion
• Proof of enrollment in a P.O.S.T. Academy

Benefits and Retirement

Deputies also earn the following pay incentives:

• 5% incentive pay for possession of sixty (60) college units or an A.A./A.S. degree
• 5% incentive pay for possession of a B.A./B.S. degree

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department issues the following equipment:

• Sig Sauer semi-automatic handgun, models P225, P226, or P229, and required ammunition
• Badge and Hat Piece
• Oleoresin Capsicum (Pepper Spray)
• Handcuffs
• Soft body armour
• Duty belt (Sam Browne), holster, and equipment cases
• Straight baton

Vacation/Sick Leave

Employees accrue leave based on their employment status, representation unit, and length of service. All permanent employees accrue sick leave at 4.6 hours per bi-weekly period. Vacation accrual is earned on a gradual scale based on years of service.

Retirement - Sacramento County Employee's Retirement System (SCERS)

Sworn employees appointed to permanent positions will be classified under the Safety Category, First or Second Tier Retirement program. An employee date of hire into membership employment as well as the bargaining unit to which the employee belongs, are the determining factors for Safety First and Second Tier Membership.

Under SCERS, contributions are required from both the employee and the employer. Retirement benefits are based upon a formula which takes into consideration an employees' final compensation, age and years of credited service.

Reciprocity is recognized by SCERS.
