Main Jail Ride Along Program
Thank you for your interest in the Main Jail Ride Along Program! This dynamic program is designed for the community, students, and/or those interested in a criminal justice career to enhance your knowledge and provide valuable insight to some of the daily operations of a custodial facility and the outstanding professional men and women who operate it.
Unlike the field service ride along program, you will not be riding in a patrol vehicle. Instead, you will be assigned to a custodial officer and have an opportunity to ask questions and experience first hand his/her daily activities in their assignment. You will be mobile (on foot) so you should plan on doing a lot of walking. Appropriate walking shoes are a must. (See clothing section for further details).
In order to be considered for participation in the program, you must meet the following criteria:
You must also complete an application and sign a waiver form. Applications may only be submitted via US Mail with an original signature on the form. Providing false or misleading information in the application is an automatic disqualifier from participating in the Ride Along Program.
Application & waiver forms can be accessed online (see below) or obtained from the public counter of the Main Jail. Once completed, please return to:
Main Jail Ride Along Coordinator
651 I Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
Please allow 10 -15 days for processing. Once your application is approved, you will be notified via e-mail or telephone of your scheduled date and time. You will be issued a confirmation letter accordingly. You must bring this confirmation letter with you on the date you are scheduled in order to participate.
The Main Jail Ride Along Program is in very high demand. Because of this, we ask that you provide alternate participation dates on your application. The Main Jail operates on a 24 hour schedule and provides the following timelines for Ride Along Participants:
We will make every effort to accommodate your original date request; however, there are no guarantees due to the high volume of requests that are generated.
If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, please notify the Main Jail Ride Along Coordinator as soon as possible prior to your scheduled time. Failure to do so, may result in termination from the program.
The Main Jail Ride Along Program is six (6) hours long. It is structured so that you will experience approximately three (3) hours in a custodial housing unit and three (3) hours in intake (booking). It is not a quick tour and we request that you stay the entire length of the Ride Along to maximize your experience.
All participants are required to check in at the front counter of the Main Jail (651 I Street) 15 minutes prior to their assigned time. Please have valid identification and your confirmation letter with you. Upon check in, the front counter will issue you a visitor badge which will need to be displayed on you at all times. You must secure all personal items prior to entering the jail.
Once you have checked in, you will be introduced to your Host Officer. Please do not wander away from the area or your assigned Host Officer. This will create a delay in the host schedule and may result in the termination of your participation.
The following items are prohibited within the secure areas of the Main Jail:
Please make arrangements to secure any personal items prior to entering the facility. There are coin operated lockers available in the lobby at a cost of $1.00 (4 quarters) if needed.
Please dress conservatively and comfortably as you will be walking most of your assigned shift. Clothing should be business casual - no jeans. Ladies, please refrain from wearing dresses, skirts or high heeled shoes. No halter tops, strapless tops, or low cut or see-through type shirt will be allowed. Gentlemen should wear khaki style pants or similar and a polo or collared shirt. No hats or shorts will be allowed. It is recommended that you be conservative on wearing any type of jewelry.

There is a an hourly fee for parking in this garage. You may also choose to use the outdoor parking lot located on the northwest corner of 7th and H Street. The entrance for this parking lot is on 7th between G and H Street. The fee for using this lot is $9.00 per vehicle per day. There is also a limited amount of metered parking available along the streets bordering the jail.
The Sacramento County Main Jail is a professional setting. You will be expected to act in accordance with this ideal. Please refrain from engaging inmates in conversation or from answering inmates if they try to engage you. Do not become separated from your Host Officer. Feel free to ask questions of your Host Officer about the things that you see. If an incident occurs, DO NOT get involved. Please pay close attention to your Host Officer and follow him or her out of the area in a calm and orderly manner. If you are having trouble with anything during your visit, please let your Host Officer know and someone will assist and escort you back to the lobby, if necessary.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation. We are looking forward to providing you with a wonderful experience.
Upon conclusion of the ride along, we ask that you please take the time to complete a brief survey about your experience. The survey can be completed online at http://www.sacsheriff.com/mainjailsurvey.
