What is a bias - hate crime? A bias crime is any criminal act directed against a person(s) based upon the victim's actual or perceived race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, mental disability, or physical disability. In other words, if the offender commits a crime primarily because the victim falls into one of the above groups, then the crime could be classified as a hate crime.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, the District Attorney's Office and the community are working together to identify, apprehend and prosecute offenders who are engaged in bias or hate motivated crimes.

Sheriff John McGinness has identified as one of his primary goals for the Sheriff's Department that all bias motivated crimes be investigated in a sensitive and expedient manner. Public trust and relationships with the public are enhanced when criminals are swiftly apprehended after they have committed a bias motivated crime.

When should I report a bias - hate crime? If the crime just occurred, there is an injury, or the suspect is still in the area, call 9-1-1. If the suspect has fled the scene, a delay in reporting has occurred call the Sheriff's Non-Emergency number at 874-5115.
