Intensive vs. Extended Format

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department currently offers both Intensive Format (daytime) and Extended Format (evening) P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academies. Non-affiliated recruits are accepted into either format. Positions for non-affiliates in the Intensive Format vary each class depending on the number of Deputy Sheriff Trainees, outside agency sponsored recruits and the number of eligible candidates that apply. The Extended Format only accepts non-affiliated recruits.

The Intensive Format academy is approximately 24 weeks in length and consists of 956 hours of training. Class instruction is generally held Monday-Thursday from 6:00am to 5:00pm, with some weekend and night sessions.

The Extended Format academy is approximately 44 weeks in length and consists of 956 hours of training. Class instruction is held Tuesday-Thursday evenings from 6:00pm-11:00pm and Saturday from 8:00am-6:00pm with occasional daytime sessions.

Upon successful completion of either format, recruits will receive a Certificate of Completion for a P.O.S.T. Basic Course that they can use to apply for employment for any law enforcement agency within the State of California.
