The Kenneth Royal Firearms Training Facility, under the Division of Training, is responsible for academy and in-service handgun, shotgun, less lethal, specialized weapon, chemical agent and munitions training. Officers must qualify with their handguns on a semiannual basis, and other weapons as directed.

Located next to the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center, the firearms facility is named in memory of Deputy Kenneth B. Royal, who was killed on June 7th of 1968, at age 36, after being struck by a robbery suspect's gunfire.

The Kenneth Royal Firearms Training Facility was created officially in the very early 70's, and has now expanded to include three separate ranges, one rifle range, a trap range, two classrooms, an office, special operations course and a Force Options Simulator, all in a landscaped park-like setting.
