At approximately 1:21 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2019, Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies assigned to the Rancho Cordova Police Department responded to reports of a carjacking at gunpoint in the area of Sunrise Boulevard and Fitzgerald Road. The caller stated an unknown male took his ice cream truck and drove off on Sunrise Boulevard.

A Sheriff’s K9 unit responding to the call observed the ice cream truck crash into a ditch on Douglas Boulevard just west of Sunrise Boulevard. The suspect exited the ice cream truck and demanded the driver of a black BMW turn over her vehicle to him. The driver exited her vehicle and retreated to safety with the help of deputies. The suspect got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and began fleeing from deputies.

The suspect was pursued by deputies westbound on Douglas Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The suspect crashed into a red sedan at the intersection of Douglas Boulevard and Zinfandel Drive. The solo female occupant sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital.

The suspect ran into an adjacent field and witnesses described seeing a gun in the suspect’s hand as he ran. Deputies contained the area and members of the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail (SED) responded to the location. With the assistance of the Sheriff’s helicopter, the suspect was located in the field and taken into custody.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital to be treated for injuries related to the vehicle accident.
