The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Airport Division K9 Detail is the best kept secret within the Department today. The Explosives Detection K9
Detail are a proven, reliable resource to detect explosives and are a key component in a balanced counter-sabotage program. The use of these highly trained K9
Detail is a proven deterrent to terrorism directed toward the transportation systems. The K9 Detail provide a timely and mobile response to facilities, airports,
rail stations, passenger terminals, seaports and surface carriers in support of the counter-terrorism efforts.
The explosive detection canine teams are used to specifically search narrow and wide-body aircraft, vehicles, terminals, warehouses and luggage in the airport
environment as well as other areas of the transportation system such as Amtrak. Our K9 Detail work jointly with our sister federal agency under the Department
of Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). In addition we work with the Department of State and the US Secret Service to search
motorcades and political venues for high profile
political figures from around the world.
The K9 Detail are not limited to the airport environment. Our K9 Detail are available to respond to any situation where there are specific threats involving
explosives. Our K9 Detail has been utilized in a variety of scenarios which include clearing sports arenas, schools and office buildings. The bomb dog’s
mobility and ability to identify the source of an explosive odor are critical elements in it’s operational use.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Airport Division K9 Detail is a cohesive unit. They are highly regarded as one of the best trained and skilled teams in
the United States by the National Explosives Detection Canine Team Evaluators. Our handlers attend an intense ten week course at Lackland Air Force Basein
San Antonio Texas. The course involves four written tests, numerous progress tests, and a final test in which the handler and dog must pass an evaluation
as a team with a score of 95% or higher.
Upon graduation, each handler and dog team must successfully pass an annual evaluation that is both demanding and time consuming. Each team is responsible to
continually train on a daily basis to maintain proficiency for utilization and evaluation purposes.
It is a rewarding job, but it is not one in which you can hang up your hat and gun when the day is done. As a canine handler you work day in and day out with
your canine partner, without days off. Your canine partner needs care 24/7 - 365 days a year and becomes an extended member of your family. Their health and
well being is just as important as yours and your families.
