The Crimes Against Persons Bureau (CAP) is dedicated to serving our community and is assigned to investigate a wide range of crimes including but not limited to aggravated assaults, domestic violence/abuse, restraining orders, stalking and many others. Although many crime types are investigated, the focus of the Bureau is the investigation and reduction of violent crimes, specifically those committed with a firearm, and domestic violence.

The bureau is currently staffed with eight investigators and one investigating supervisor. The Bureau receives case reports from patrol deputies, mandated reporters such as medical professionals, and those reports generated through the Sheriff’s Online Reporting System or Sheriff’s Community Service Centers, averaging approximately 9,000 reported cases of violent criminal behavior each year.

Several of the investigators within the bureau are specifically assigned to the Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT). DVRT utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to serving those person(s) and children affected by domestic violence. The DVRT is partnered with local victim and family advocacy groups as well as representatives from the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office to provide the highest level of support and resources available through all stages of investigation and court room proceedings. Some of the advocacy groups we partner with include the Sacramento County Family Justice Center, W.E.A.V.E. and the “My Sister’s House” foundation.

If you have been involved in a domestic violence incident, any other violent crime OR you have information that may benefit an investigation; you contact the CAP Bureau to find out the status of the investigation, provide additional information and/or seek assistance in identifying services available to you.
