The Special Investigations/Intelligence Bureau consists of a Supervisor (Sheriff's Lieutenant), and 5 detectives. Detectives are assigned to investigate specific crimes including state and federal gaming violations, prostitution related offenses, solicitation for murder and extortion. Detectives assigned to S.I.I.B. have an expertise in working various undercover assignments that require the use of specialized surveillance equipment. An additional area of responsibility includes dignitary protection.

ATF Task Force
The Sheriff's detective assigned to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms' Task Force works to convert state firearms violations involving ex-felons, into federally prosecutable cases. Once the local charges are converted into federal violations, the suspects are prosecuted in federal court, saving state and local taxpayer's money. When these cases are prosecuted federally, the suspects often face harsher sentences for their crimes.

Business License/Labor Relations Detail
The Business Licensing / Labor Relations Detail is responsible to ensure the public health, safety and welfare is adequately protected from particular types of individuals or groups who promote criminal activity. They review and conduct background checks on individuals seeking licensing to conduct business within the County of Sacramento.

Gambling/Vice Operations Detail
The detectives assigned to the Gambling/Vice Operations Detail identify and suppress individuals, groups or organizations engaged in the practice of prostitution, pimping and pandering, public displays of lewd conduct, the distribution of obscene material and state and federal gambling violations.

Human Trafficking Unit
The Human Trafficking Unit is responsible for investigating allegations of all forms of human trafficking. This includes both sex and labor trafficking involving children and adults, as well as victims who are U.S.-born and/or foreign nationals. The Human Trafficking Unit also works cooperatively with local and national Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to help identify victims and connect those victims with services.

Minor Tobacco Sales Unit
Through grant funding detectives conduct operations to detect and prevent the sale and distribution of tobacco products to minors. Detectives assigned to the unit participate in education campaigns and various undercover operations to ensure compliance with laws designed to keep tobacco products out of the hands of children.
