Update - Human Remains Discovered Buried in Backyard

On December 26, 2017, at 2:28 p.m. the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Communication Center received a call from the 6200 block of Dundee Drive within the north area of Sacramento County.  The caller indicated bones were located in the backyard of a residence and the caller suspected the bones to be human.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded and located some of the remains, which had surfaced from beneath the ground.  Patrol deputies along with homicide investigators utilized various stages of verification and determined the remains were human.  As the preliminary stages of this investigation progressed, investigators spent almost two days at the location and were able to unearth an entire human skeleton.  The remainder of the property was checked by investigators and it was determined no other remains were buried on the premises.

At the time of this discovery, the residence on the property was vacant and the remains were discovered by workers assisting in the renovation of the home.  It was not believed the remains were ancient and the matter was initially being investigated as a suspicious death.

During the course of this investigation, it was determined this death was the result of a homicide and a suspect was identified.  On January 5, 2018, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect and identified him as 22-year-old Michael Christopher Sager.  Hours later, investigators arrested Sager in north Sacramento County.  Sager has been booked into custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail for murder and is ineligible for bail due to his charges.

Investigators believe the victim and Sager were involved in a verbal argument which led to Sager stabbing the victim, ultimately killing him.  Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives have developed information leading them to believe the murder occurred in the summer of 2015 at the home on Dundee Drive.

The identity of the victim, in this case, will be made available by the Sacramento County Coroner’s office.
