Passing of Sheriff’s K-9 Nikk

Sacramento County Sheriff’s K-9 Nikk passed away this morning while on duty.  Nikk’s deputy sheriff handler noticed that he had become lethargic and was having trouble standing.  Nikk was rushed to the VCA Animal Hospital where the on duty emergency veterinarian performed diagnostic tests and determined it was a possible stroke.  Nikk passed away at 7:50 a.m. today.

Nikk was an 8-year-old German Shepard. He had been trained and placed in-service on December 9, 2011.  Nikk was responsible for numerous felony apprehensions and participated in countless demonstrations for children in the community.  Law enforcement canines live their lives to serve the communities they work for; K-9 Nikk was the epitome of this sentiment.  K-9 Nikk was the partner of Deputy Ramie Folena, an 18-year veteran with the department who has been assigned to the K-9 unit since 2012.

Sheriff Scott Jones stated, “Our canine partners are very much a part of our family, and Nikk’s untimely passing during his shift today is a profound loss that is felt not only in the Sheriff’s Department but the entire community.”  Please keep the Sheriff’s Office and the law enforcement K-9 community in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  Service information will be forthcoming.
