Sheriff’s Canine Stabbed by Suspect

On Saturday, May 19th, at 11:50 A.M. the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department was notified by California State Parole of a man who was wanted in connection with a domestic violence incident in a neighboring jurisdiction.  The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Jackie Burke of Sacramento.   Burke is currently on parole and is also a convicted sex offender and as such, he is required to wear a GPS ankle monitor.

Utilizing the GPS technology, Sheriff’s Deputies were able to track Burke to a north Sacramento neighborhood.  Deputies located Burke driving a vehicle near the 4500 block of Hackberry Lane and attempted to conduct a traffic stop upon the vehicle he was driving.  Burke failed to stop for the officers and led them on a slow speed pursuit, which eventually terminated in the 8300 block of Fair Oaks Boulevard when he stopped his vehicle in a parking lot.

When Burke stopped his vehicle, he refused to exit and stated he was armed with a gun. Deputies attempted to negotiate with Burke but he continually refused to exit the vehicle.  After continued negotiations, Burke emerged from the vehicle while concealing one of his hands, acting as if he had a weapon.

A Sheriff’s Deputy engaged Burke with a less-lethal bean bag shotgun and he was struck with one bean bag round while a Sheriff’s Department canine was sent to apprehend him. Burke remained uncooperative and as the canine approached, Burke stabbed the canine multiple times in the head.

Burke was subsequently taken into custody and the canine was immediately transported to a local animal hospital for treatment.  Burke sustained injuries as a result of the canine bite and was treated at a local hospital prior to being transported to jail.

The Canine, “Jedi” is a three-year-old German Shepherd and has been serving with the Sheriff’s Department for 14 months.  Jedi is expected to survive but will be undergoing surgery this afternoon.  Burke has been booked into the Sacramento County Jail for charges pertaining to violating his parole and felony assault on a police animal.  Burke is currently ineligible for bail due to his charges.
