Wilton Assault Leaves Man in Critical Condition

On July 8, 2018, at 2:33 pm, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Communications Center received a 911 call from the 12000 block of Hobday Road, within the Wilton Community of South Sacramento County.

The caller stated there was a male at the location striking another male with a hammer.  The caller stayed on the line with the 911 operator and continued to relay information regarding the violent assault as it continued.

Sheriff’s patrol deputies immediately responded, in addition to the Sheriff’s Department helicopter, which was conducting a regular patrol flight.  The caller retreated to his home and armed himself with a firearm.  The suspect attempted to enter the callers’ home but then continued his assault on the victim.

The caller exited his home and held the suspect at gunpoint while ordering him to stop the assault.  The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Helicopter arrived on-scene and was able to safely land the aircraft.  Helicopter crew members exited the aircraft and were able to successfully detain the suspect.  The victim was transported to an area hospital after sustaining injuries, which were deemed life-threatening.

Sheriff’s Detectives responded to the scene and began their investigation.  Detectives have arrested 34-year-old Jose Gardea of Sacramento for his involvement in this crime.  Gardea has been booked on charges related to assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, and a violation of his Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) probation. He is currently being held in the Sacramento County Main Jail and is ineligible for bail due to his charges.

At this time, it is believed the victim and suspect were two of three men assisting the homeowner with maintenance on his property. The victim remains hospitalized and is currently in critical condition.
