Recently Released Inmate Death

On May 11, 2022, at approximately 6:00 p.m., a 59-year-old male inmate, who was released from custody earlier this same day, died at the hospital from a pre-existing medical condition that was not related to Covid-19.  The man had been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on May 4, 2022, for a violation of parole stemming from felony narcotic charges.

At approximately 11:44 p.m., on May 9, 2022, the inmate, who was housed on the medical floor, was observed laying on the floor of his cell by a deputy performing a routine cell check.  The deputy assisted the subject who stated he was having back pain and trouble breathing.  Correctional Health Medical staff responded to the cell, evaluated him and requested Sacramento City Fire transport him to the hospital where he was admitted.

There were no visible injuries or trauma observed and no foul play is suspected.  As is operational practice, A Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detective Sergeant and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office was notified of the death.

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with policies and procedures and in accordance with state law.  The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and release the name of the deceased.
