Medically Related Incustody Death

On the night of Saturday, July 23, 2022, a 67-year old male inmate experienced a medical emergency and died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The subject had been in custody since July 13, 2022, for felony domestic violence charges and for being a fugitive from justice.  He was discovered semi-conscious on the floor of his cell which he occupied alone.  Deputies rendered immediate aid until Sacramento Fire arrived and transported him to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.  Covid-19 is not a suspected factor in his death as this inmate was vaccinated and had previously tested negative multiple times, as recently as July 19, 2022.  He was wheel chair dependent and housed on the medical floor due to ongoing medical issues related to long-term illicit drug use.

A review of several hours of surveillance video leading up to his death shows no nefarious activity.  There were no visible injuries or trauma observed and no foul play is suspected.  As is practice with any inmate death, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detectives and CSI were advised.  In addition, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Parole Board was notified.

The Sheriff’s Office will complete an inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedure and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine a cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The identity of the deceased victim will be made by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after notification has been made to his next of kin.
