On Monday, January 23, 2023, at approximately 12:48 PM, Main Jail deputies were alerted by other inmates about an unresponsive inmate inside his cell. Deputies immediately entered the cell and found that the inmate was not breathing and had no pulse. Deputies administered life saving measures as Main Jail medical staff and the Sacramento Fire Department responded. Fire personnel arrived and continued life-saving efforts for over 20 minutes until the inmate regained a pulse.
The inmate was transported to a local hospital, where he died, hours later. The inmate, a 52-year-old male, had been in custody since September 24th, 2022, for Assault with a Deadly Weapon [PC 245(a)(1)].
Deputies had been in both visual and verbal contact with the inmate approximately 10 minutes before the medical emergency. No issues or concerns were identified by the Deputies during that interaction. He was housed by himself and no suspicious circumstances were identified at the time of this release.
The Sheriff’s Office will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedures and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after notification has been made to his next of kin.
