Man Arrested for Stabbing for Stabbing a 7-Year-Old

Just after 7:15 PM on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, while out on an unrelated call for service at an apartment complex on the 2800 block of La Loma Drive in Rancho Cordova, Rancho Cordova Police Officers were waved down about a 7-year-old girl who had been stabbed.  Officers rushed to her aid, and she was transported to the hospital.  They learned that she had been stabbed by a neighbor, later identified as 27-year-old Angelo Bagnas, who was inside his apartment.

Officers called for additional resources, surrounded Bagnas’s apartment, and attempted to call him out and surrender.  Bagnas was seen holding a knife in his hand but never acknowledged the officer and refused to exit his apartment.  The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail (SED), Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT), K9, and several other Sheriff’s assets were dispatched to the scene.  Deputies and Officers attempted to contact Bagnas via phone, text message, and PA announcements, all to no avail.  Sheriff’s Office Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) were also deployed to maintain observation of Bagnas, who continued to hold a knife in his hand and refused to exit the apartment.

Hours later, SED deployed less lethal gas inside the apartment to encourage Bagnas to surrender, but he still refused.  SED employed the use of the armored Bearcat vehicle, as well as the Rook, with a battering ram attachment to breach a window.

After several more hours of repeated failed contact via traditional methods with Bagnas, SED used the platform attachment on the Rook, elevating a team of SED Deputies to the second-floor window to try and establish a face-to-face dialogue with Bagnas.  Bagnas still refused to comply with their directions to surrender.

Just before 5 AM the following morning, after nearly 10 hours of negotiations, SED shot Bagnas with several less lethal bean bag rounds from the rear window of the apartment, once again employing the use of the Rook and platform attachment.  Bagnas then attempted to run out of the front door, still holding the knife, when he was tased by Deputies and subsequently detained without further incident.

Bagnas was transported to the hospital as a precaution and later booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he remains ineligible for bail.  He is scheduled to appear in court on April 12, 2024.

Thankfully, the 7-year-old victim is expected to make a full recovery.
