Double Homicide at Apartment Complex on Howe Avenue

At approximately 10:40 PM on Tuesday, April 10, 2024, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a two-round ShotSpotter activation at an apartment complex on 1100 Howe Avenue in Sacramento. Simultaneously, several people called 911, reporting that two females had been shot. North Patrol Deputies arrived on scene moments later and discovered two adult females lying on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, both were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene, began their investigation, interviewed witnesses, and gathered evidence. Detectives were able to identify the suspect as 32-year-old Ricky Hunter and obtained an arrest warrant for both murders.

Just after 2 PM on Wednesday, April 11, 2024, Sheriff’s Detectives located Hunter inside a cell phone store on the 1700 block of Arden Way. Hunter was considered armed and dangerous, and in an attempt to avoid a dangerous situation inside of a crowded shopping area, Detectives waited for Hunter to return to his vehicle, parked in the parking lot. Once Hunter entered his vehicle, Detectives converged on him at gunpoint to take him into custody. Hunter then picked up a shotgun from inside the vehicle and shot himself once in the chest.

Detectives pulled an unconscious Hunter out of the vehicle and immediately began to render first aid. Hunter was transported to the hospital by ambulance with life-threatening injuries, where he currently remains at the time of this release.
