Yesterday evening at approximately 7 PM, a male inmate housed on 4-West at the Sacramento County Main Jail pressed the emergency button in his cell and alerted Deputies that he had been in a fight with his cellmate. Deputies responded to the cell, detained the inmate who called and discovered his cellmate lying on the floor. Deputies then pulled the downed inmate out of the cell and began CPR. Fire personnel arrived a short time later and unfortunately pronounced the inmate deceased.
Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators arrived on scene and began their investigation. More information will be made available once the investigation is complete.

The identity of the deceased inmate will be made by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office in accordance with their protocols. The other involved inmate will be identified if the investigators determine that criminal charges are applicable.
