Yesterday afternoon at approximately 3:15 PM, Sheriff’s Central Patrol and POP (Problem Oriented Policing) Deputies observed a vehicle with no license plates traveling northbound on Highway 99 near 47th Avenue. When they attempted to conduct a vehicle stop, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as 28-year-old Xavier Torres, refused to stop and led Deputies on a vehicle pursuit, going onto surface streets. Less than two minutes into the pursuit, Torres crashed into a civilian vehicle near Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard and 23rd Avenue, after which he was quickly detained without further incident. Once detained, Deputies then discovered Torres’ 2-year-old and 6-month-old children inside of the vehicle. Fortunately, the children were not hurt, and the occupants of the civilian vehicle only sustained minor injuries.
A further search of the vehicle revealed a loaded handgun, which had been reported stolen, along with a bindle of cocaine.
The children were released to their mother, and Torres was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he was booked for multiple felonies, including child endangerment. Hours later, Torres posted bond on his $75,000 bail and was released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 13.
Based on his arrests for “non-violent” crimes, Torres’ booking photo is not available for release, per California law.
